Local vs. central ventilation system?

The quality of air in our homes is extremely important for our health and well-being. Ventilation is a key factor in ensuring fresh and clean air indoors. In today's post, we will focus on two main types of ventilation: local and central ventilation. We will explore the advantages and disadvantages of each system, so you can choose the best solution for your needs.

What is local ventilation?

Local ventilation refers to a system that ventilates individual rooms independently of one another, or in a way that local ventilation systems are interconnected and operate synchronously. These systems often include wall-mounted local ventilation devices that draw fresh air from outside while simultaneously expelling polluted air from indoor spaces. This type of ventilation is flexible and can easily be adapted to the specific needs of each room.

  1. Flexibility: Users can adjust the intensity of ventilation in different rooms, providing greater comfort. However, it is important to ensure that the balance between the incoming and outgoing air is maintained when adjusting airflow. .
  2. Quick installation: Local ventilation systems are usually simpler to install in existing spaces, without the need for a complex network of duct installations.
  3. Lower initial costs: Local ventilation systems are often less expensive and require smaller initial investments

What is central ventilation?

Central ventilation is a system that allows for uniform ventilation of the entire building through a network of ventilation ducts. This system enables efficient air exchange in all rooms simultaneously. Modern, efficient central ventilation systems are equipped with heat exchangers or recuperators, which improve energy efficiency by recovering heat from the exhaust air. .

Centralni prezračevalni sistem in njegove prednosti:

  1. Uniform ventilation: Due to the centralized system, ventilation is evenly distributed throughout all rooms. The system supplies fresh air to the rooms where we spend most of our time and expels air from areas where we spend less time.
  2. Greater energy efficiency: With heat exchangers or recuperators, energy from the used air is reused, resulting in lower heating and cooling costs.
  3. Less noise: Central systems are usually quieter, as the fans are located in the central ventilation unit, and sound dampers are installed at the beginning of the ductwork to prevent the noise from being transmitted to the ceiling ventilation vents or grilles in individual rooms.

Lokalno prezračevanje ali centralno prezračevanje? Kaj izbrati?

The choice between local and central ventilation depends on several factors, including the size and design of your home, your comfort needs, and your budget. If you need a quick and flexible solution for individual rooms, local ventilation might be a better choice. On the other hand, if you are looking for a long-term, energy-efficient solution, central ventilation is the better option..

What is the cost of local and central ventilation?

The cost of both systems depends on several factors, and more on this topic can be read in our post: Price of ventilation system. In general, the investment for the same building with the installation of multiple local ventilation systems will cost approximately 15% less than the investment in a central ventilation system. However, it's important to note that with local ventilation systems, we cannot ventilate the entire building (e.g., small storage rooms, hallways, staircases). If we were to install local ventilation devices in even the smallest spaces, the cost of local ventilation would exceed that of central ventilation.

If we want to choose a system that will effectively ventilate every corner of our living or working environment, central ventilation is definitely the best choice.
